Die Anfänge

Will Smith wurde am 25. September 1968 in Philadelphia geboren und wuchs zusammen mit seinen 3 Geschwistern in Süd-Philadelphia auf.

Er wurde von seinen Freunden schon seit je her auf Grund seiner Coolness und seiner Jungenstreiche, aus denen er sich jedoch immer wieder geschickt herausredete, “Fresh Prince” genannt und galt als beliebter Klassenclown. Seine Noten waren durchweg gut und besonders in Mathe und Englisch taten sich seine Stärken auf.

Mitte der Achtziger fing er aus Spass und ohne grössere Absichten an zu rappen und traf somit total den Zahn der Zeit. Zu Anfang trat er nur auf kleinen Party´s auf und gab dort als “Fresh Prince” seine Performance´s zum Besten. Doch so recht erfolgreich war er damit nicht. Ihm war klar, dass er jemand brauchte der hinter ihm steht und die Beats am Leben hält. Wie das Schicksal es wollte traf er eines Abends Jeff Townes auf einer Party und die beiden kamen ins Gespräch. Jeff Townes, bekannt als DJ Jazzy Jeff, suchte ebenfalls einen Partner für seine musikalische Zukunft und obwohl er schon mit einigen MC´s gearbeitet hatte sagte ihm keiner so recht zu um eine weitere Zukunft mit ihm einzugehen.

Mit Will Smith war dies anders, sie verstanden sich auf Anhieb grossartig und begannen zusammen Musik zu machen. Sie arbeiteten nahezu jede freie Minute an ihrer Musik und waren somit mehr in Jeff´s Studio als sonst wo. Sie zogen sich unterdessen noch einen 3ten Mann an Bord. Ready Rock C (Clarence Holmes), auch genannt “The Living Beat Box”. Die 3 verbrachten viel Zeit miteinander und waren verdammt gute Freunde.

Der Durchbruch

1986 schafften sie dann endlich den langerwarteten Durchbruch und gewannen einen Plattenvertrag bei Jive! auf dem “New Music Seminar” in New York.

Anschliessend ging es steil Bergauf. Ihr erster Song “Girls Ain´t Nothing But Trouble” wurde auf Anhieb ein Hit und und circa ein Jahr später erschien das Debut Album “Rock The House”. Es schlug ein wie eine Bombe und verkaufte sich satte 600.000 mal. Die nächsten Auskopplungen hiessen “The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff” und “A Touch Of Jazz” (nach welchem sein eigenes, 1990 gegründetes, Lable benannt wurde).

1988 erschien anschliessend das langerwartete Sequel “He´s the DJ and I´m The Rapper”. Dieses Album erreichte unglaubliche Verkaufszahlen und ging circa 3 Millionen Mal über die Ladentheke. Die erste Auskopplung war "Parents Just Don't Understand" und mit dieser Single gewannen sie auf Anhieb den allerersten Rap-Emmy. Auch die zweite Single “A Nightmare On My Street” verkaufte sich grossartig.

Um auf Erfolgskurs zu bleiben hauten die 3 Jungs 1989 direkt die nächste LP raus (“And In This Corner...”). Doch diese war bei weitem nicht so erfolgreich wie der Vorgänger und es wurde nur 1 Single Ausgekoppelt (“I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson”).

Doch trotz dieses kleinen Rückschrittes bekamen Will, Jeff und Clarence die Möglichkeit mit den Grossvätern des Hip Hop zu Touren: Run DMC. Um dies zu ermöglichen musste Will das College schmeissen und dies gegen den willen seiner Eltern. Doch wirklich schwer ist ihm dies nicht gefallen.

Die Wege der 3 Jungs begannen sich zu trennen. Ready Rock C wurde laut Will nicht mehr benötigt und somit mehr oder weniger unfreiwillig aus der Band gekickt. Warum weiss bis heute niemand so genau. Die 3 verblieben aber weiterhin Freundschaftlich. Somit standen Will und Jeff alleine da, waren sich aber sicher, dass sie weitermachen würden.
